Ashaya has extremely tight kinky hair. She has long curly hair that can seemingly take forever to grow since her shrinkage is very significant. Her hair is strong and healthy as a result of avoiding chemicals (colouring and relaxers). Since her curls are so fine and tight, her hair retains a ton of moisture causing the hair to take several hours to dry. Keep reading to see how Jonathan got the best from her kinky curls and what tips he has for those of you who have similar curl texture and length.
How to Achieve Ashaya’s fabulous curls:
1. Use a combination of Curly Hair Solutions Treatment Shampoo for strength and cleansing, and Silk Shampoo for extra moisture. Either mix the two together, or wash first with Treatment Shampoo and second with Silk Shampoo. Always make sure that the shampoos are thoroughly rinsed out before leaving the shower.
2. Next, add roughly a quarter size amount of Pure Silk Protein on the ends for conditioning, leaving it on for 3-5 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. Since coarse and kinky curls often crave moisture, for Ashaya’s curls I used Slip Detangler as well, which is a lighter multi-purpose leave-in conditioner. Using Slip, also allowed me to remove all loose hairs and knots to ensure a more controlled result.
3. While the hair is still very wet, distribute generous amounts of both Curl Keeper Original and Styling Cream from roots to ends. The combination of these two products provides curl definition and shine eto her curls, and also allows combs and brushes to glide easily through the hair with little to no resistance, allowing for perfect curl formation.
4. Allow the hair to dry naturally and air dry. This will give the curls optimal >frizz control. Once her hair dries with as little movement as possible, the cuticles will dry in a closed position and the hair will be frizz-free, and feel soft, and shiny.
Common Misconceptions: When you see tight kinky hair that is not controlled, the first thing you might assume is that it is dry and brittle since you are blinded by frizz and chaos. There is also very little shine in the hair when is not styled, so we tend to also assume that the hair is damaged and in desperate need of moisture. Tight kinky hair has several different curl types all on the same head of hair, and this can become confusing when it comes to choosing the right styling products and technique. There will be sections that get wet immediately and sections that seem impossible to retain water. There will be sections of hair that dry more quickly than others. These conditions do present challenges, but once identified they are easily rectified.
Growing Out Kinky Curls: It’s important to keep kinky hairhealthy, as the longer the hair grows, the easier styling becomes. It takes discipline and patience to grow kinky hair since it can be frustrating getting through periods when the curls won’t co-operate with you. It can also be a struggle to have the determination to avoid hot irons and other high heat appliances, which ends up causing heat damage and in turn results in less trims. But if you can keep with your goal and grow your hair as long as possible, you will be able to achieve a longer defined curl formation.
Cocktail Combination and Techniques for Styling: The roughness of kinky hair makes it a challenge to comb and detangle most of the time. The cocktail combination of Curl Keeper Original and Styling Cream assisted in making this process easier. When you continually comb the hair, it allows for the tighter curls to really unwind. Once there is no resistance, you can switch to a smaller tooth comb to allow for better unwinding of the tighter kinkier curl – and with Styling Cream and Curl Keeper Original, you can feel free to use the small tooth comb without worrying about tangles. Use the Root Brush to completely unravel the curls and to help the products penetrate the rougher hair cuticles. Using these curly hair products and techniques, makes it easier to form new groupings of curls that are controlled, defined, and organized into beautiful ringlets. It is helpful to twist groups of curls together to help elongate and form them into thicker, longer ringlets.
There is no quick or short way of achieving total control of kinky hair. As previously noted, it takes time and patience. However, all Curl Keeper products reactivate with water, so if you take your time and master the steps at the beginning, you can reactivate your style by running wet hands over any frizzy area. Reactivating the products will allow your style to last for several days.
