Q&A with Curl Stylist Romina

I am so happy to have sat down with the newest member of the team of expert stylists at the Curly Hair Institute, Romina Munoz. Originally born in Argentina and raised in Toronto she has had the incredible opportunity to shadow and work side by side with Jonathan Torch for the past four years. Now when Romina and I get together, it’s usually trouble, but I was able to catch her in between clients – instead of stirring up trouble we were able to chat for a bit! I was able to find out what her most memorable moment has been thus far in her career working with curly hair, as well as what is something she tells her clients every time they sit down in her chair! If you have any questions for Romina, please leave your comments below!

What made you want to become a curly hair stylist?
I’ve always been fascinated with hair especially curly hair. Having naturally curly hair myself, once I got into the beauty industry and got my hands wet I knew being a curly hair stylist was for me.

What are a few important things that you’ve learnt about curly hair over the years?
I’ve learnt that no two heads are the same! Every person is different, which is why we treat each client’s hair differently – with the right product and cut we can tame their curls.

What would you encourage people to NOT do with their curls?
I encourage people NOT to cut their curls off! I know at some point we all get frustrated with our curls, but with some love we can learn how to embrace our natural curls.

What is your most memorable moment during career as a curl stylist?
My most memorable moment as a curl stylist was my first hair trade show in Toronto. It was an amazing feeling to be involved in one of the biggest hair shows in the beauty industry and get to share with everyone my passion for curls.

What is one thing you constantly tell your clients?
I advise my clients to spend time preparing their hair. The key to a successful curly hairstyle is found in the preparation stage. If you spend time combing product from roots to ends, the curls will follow.

Name 3 of your Holy Grail products:
My number one Holy Grail product is Curly Keeper – I don’t know what I’d do without it! I love big hair, so RevUp! Volumist is a definite must for me. Lastly, Slip Detangler is another product I can’t go a day without.

Steps on how to achieve your favourite hairstyle:
1. On wet untangled hair apply Curl Keeper from roots to ends
2. With a Root Brush – my favourite styling tool – create lift straight from the root to get maximum volume
3. Twist some pieces around your face to create some more defined curls
4. Use gel while scrunching curls
5. Spray RevUp! for volume and diffuse until dry

If you could change one thing about your curls what would it be?
If I could change one thing about my curls, it would be to have tighter curls – but I do love the curls I have! I think tight curlsusually come with volume and I LOVE volume!

If you could have one curly hair celebrity’s hair, who would it be and why?
I have always loved Shakira’s hair! She has great curls and even better volume. I’m fascinated with big hair and I am always trying to get more volume.
