Ask the Expert: How to Get a Salon Quality Blow-Out on a Budget?

With Frizzoff Founder and Curl Guru for Over Twenty Years, Jonathan Torch

Q. Hi Jonathan, I’m a huge fan of all of your Curly Hair Solutions products. Whenever I have a curly hair question I skip Google and come straight to your page to try and find the answer. My work Christmas party is approaching and I wanted to change things up and get a blow-out. I’m going to try and do it myself and I was wondering if you have any tips on how I can get a salon quality blow-out on a budget?

A. Thank you so much, it is wonderful to hear you are enjoying your Frizzoff products!
If you are attempting to straighten your curly hair, there are specific things that you should do to ensure that you don’t do any permanent damage to your hair. I’m not sure if you are aware of a product on our website called ReMane Straight. ReMane Straight is a styling product I developed that makes straightening curly hair easier, safer, and to have a longer-lasting effect and style for the hair (especially if the hair is going to be exposed to humidity).

There are three main factors that you need to pay attention to when straightening curly hair. Straightening curly hair requires extreme heat, paired with extreme tension for optimal results. The finer your hair is, the less heat is required to straighten it. However, the amount of times your hair has been chemically treated will also play a significant role in the straightening process. Hair that has been exposed to a lot of chemicals over time requires more care when achieving the perfect blow-out.

In my opinion, the straightening process requires round brushing with tension, while blasting heat from your blow dryer to dry the stretched hair. Allowing the hair to cool down while keeping that tension will help the hair to set in the new straight position. Going over the hair with a flat iron afterward will smooth the hair and will give it an even straighter, sleeker look. After the styling and drying is finished, I would apply a tiny amount of our Tweek to control any flyaway hairs. This will also help with static control and to make your hair look shinier and smoother.
