While it may not always be possible to order from your supplier (maybe you find yourself on vacation and left your product at home), always choosing silicone-free products will ensure that the work you’ve put into having luscious curls won’t be wasted thanks to faulty products containing silicone.

Here are two things to consider:

1. Why Do I Need to Avoid Silicone?

Silicone-based product wreaks havoc on curly hair, as the product sits on top of the hair and doesn’t allow for moisture to enter the follicle. Anyone with curly hair has struggled with frizz at one point or another and there’s no quicker way to less- manageable curls than by using product that keeps hair dry. With products containing silicone, that is not just a “possibility,” it’s a guarantee. It’s important to know what indicates that there’s silicone in the products you’re getting over the counter, and what you should avoid if buying product at your local drugstore.

2. Become fluent in silicone speak

Learning the scientific names of the products containing silicones will ensure you’re savvy enough to know which product to place right back on the shelf you grabbed them while hunting for your curly hair solution.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS:

• Cetyl Dimethicone

• Dimethicone

• Cetearyl Methicone

• Trimethylsilylamodimethicone

• Amodimethicone

These are just a sampling of the ingredients to avoid using. Note the final four letters in each of these. “Cone” is a stark indicator that the chemical compound within the ingredient contains silicone. Even with words that most people probably couldn’t pronounce without a little coaching, we all recognize “cone” when we see it. Unfortunately, for people with curly hair, that should illicit the complete opposite reaction to normally hearing the word cone – which is usually an offering of something filled with our favourite frozen treats.
